Business and Competitiveness

The challenges and business opportunities presented by the fully networked car

networked car

Within the thematic areas Business and Competitiveness, the #CICD 2013 will examine the technological, cultural and business innovations triggered by the fully networked car, focusing particularly on three key areas. Firstly, we will be looking at the technological side of things, such as connectivity and interaction with the driver and the rest of the world. Secondly, we will be exploring the design of new services, including the gateway and all the different applications that it will offer. And finally, we will also focus on the new business model that this kind of car will generate, both as regards service payment and in terms of security.

We have dedicated two presentations to this issue. The first will analyse the business opportunities presented by this new concept, since the idea of a vehicle connected to the Internet opens up a plethora of new opportunities for all types of companies (high-tech, content-based, entertainment and those offering other services), linked to the appearance of new functions and business models. Juhani Jääskeläinen, Head of the ICT Unit for Transport at the European Commission Directorate-General for the Information Society in Brussels, will be talking about the EU support programmes and regulatory framework, as well as about practical aspects such as managing access to information and data and harmonising the legislation of different EU member states.

Mr Jääskeläinen has extensive experience in the industrial field and has worked in R&D management in various international companies, including Ericsson and Asea Brown Boveri.  Before joining the Commission he worked for several years at the Finnish Technology Development Agency, first as a Research Manager for Space Technologies and later as the Director of Space Technologies.

The second presentation will analyse both the new challenge and the fantastic opportunity that fully networked vehicles offer the car industry. Oriol Saperas, Manager of the AIC (Automotive Intelligence Centre) will help us understand why the networked car has triggered the emergence of a whole new market and will talk about who will be involved in developing it. Mr Saperas has 10 years’ professional experience in the car industry in Germany, France and Spain, working as an engineer for Renault, Deputy Director for Projects at CAF and Head of the Technical Department for Epsilon Euskadi. During his presentation, he will talk about how the opportunities opened up by the networked vehicle include the development and application of technology which will permit interaction with the environment and provide services to the driver.

Mikel Lorente, Technical Manager of the Basque Country’s Automotive Cluster (ACICAE) and the AIC will be talking about the technological challenges facing us in this field, and their feasibility. For the last 14 years Mikel has worked in the car industry as a product engineer at the Dana Corporation (USA), as a project manager at Raba Axles (Hungary) and as a six sigma black belt and project manager at Dana Barcelona.
